The Build it Green competition allowed SCAPE to work with 3 New Jersey Cities and develop strategies to address their Combined Sewer Overflow challenges. Working closely with re:focus partners, proposed strategies combined resilient infrastructure with creative funding ideas that align stormwater management with other city priorities. With a focus on the intersection of stormwater and flood risk in Jersey City, flooding as a barrier to economic development in Gloucester, and the synergies between green infrastructure and pedestrian safety in Perth Amboy, SCAPE and re:focus worked with city officials to outline specific design and financing strategies.
In addition, the team developed The Field Guide to CSO+, a resource designed to empower decision makers charged with addressing CSOs in their communities by helping them identify synergies with other municipal goals and priorities. By developing projects that combine parking, economic development, broadband access, or other initiatives with green and gray stormwater management strategies cities can tap non-traditional funding sources to help alleviate the pressure on wastewater treatment plants and reduce pollution in their waterways.
