SCAPE created this landscape design in collaboration with Studio Gang Architects for the new facilities for Rescue Company 2 in Brooklyn. The design combines functionality and quality aesthetics for three different spaces – the yard, second-floor balconies and a green roof. Permeable pavers in the yard mimic the red portals that cover the structure’s surface and make entrances to the building legible to visitors. The patterned driveway is complemented by a patchwork of sedum carpet on either side of the rooftop training tower collects and filters rainwater. The low-maintenance planting not only contributes to the green building features, but also offers habitat for the local ecology. On the East, West and North walls, a matrix of vine-covered screens enclose the yard with a palette that changes with the season and create a private space for the Company staff to socialize during off hours.
